Nice, fashionable male corset
There are some great shots of a corsetmaker’s creations on this journal page. This is a very nice male corset; it’s definitely one of the most fashionable outfits I’ve seen in some time.

Beautifully done. Now I’d love to see this corset-maker design and make a sleek man’s “corset-waistcoat” that matches the fabric of the rest of the suit; laces like a corset, and extends, like a vest, up across part of the chest and over the shoulders. The wide, firm, but comfortable shoulder straps and high back boning could supply the wearer some additional encouragement to stand erect. If the garment had a dummy second closure in front, with buttons, it would look less like a corset and more like a vest. For “dress” occasions, another corset-waistcoat might be made in a contrasting, handsome brocade with fancier buttons
If you click and surf and click you finally get to the model’s webpage who is also a photographer and likes corsets. Click http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/601417 to see a dozen more corset photos. And they are all extremely well done. Great art.
Yes, very classy…. my theory as to why so many of us don’t appreciate these modelled corsets so much is because they are always worn (and for obvious reason) on the outside of the clothes. As a corset enthusiast myself, I’d much rather see corsets developed specifically for men to wear UNDER the clothes – as they are intended. These designer photoshoots treat the corset more as a PROP, a statement – and I really can’t see corsets catching on with men to any extent if they are always imagined as ‘outerwear.’
I recently made a corset purchase – about three weeks ago – from Orchard Corsets. Here is the detail page for the style I bought –

The price was, of course, unbelievable – but the corset itself is awesome! It’s actually a TIGHTLACING corset in a ‘cincher’
(11″ front – quite adquate) length…. 16 spiral steels, a real, stiff metal busk, and is fully lined with heavy fabric – the outer fabric is a beautiful, strong pinstripe. It is, of course, an ‘off-the-shelf’ corset – but despite the warnings you always hear about them, it is way beyond the quality of any other ‘shelf corset’ I’ve ever seen (and most men/women of the 19th century wore off-the-rack corsets, obviously) – and the PRICE – 70 bucks – is so worth it!
The reason it’s so cheap is because it is imported – and if you look around, there are tons of corsets pouring onto the market from overseas (as in Pakistan, Thailand, etc.) But since corset-making is mostly LABOR costs and not material, it makes a lot of sense – and the craftsmanship is impeccable. I have been wearing it as much as humanly possible since I got it in the mail three weeks ago – laced down about 4-5 inches – and I’m loving it more every day. I’ll post some photos as soon as I get a photosite set up…. but anyway, I definitely recommend this (and similar) corset to other readers…….
PS – it’s also a very masculine style – at least in my opinion. Especially with the pinstripe print and the simple but well-shaped styling.

Hi Poppapo: I’m 100% with you on the proper way for men to wear corsets–NOT on the outside as silly “statements”, but underneath properly designed clothes that are DEPENDENT on the corsets to help create their whole look. Where oh where can we find such a designer? Sometimes I wonder if someone like Tim Gunn, who’s always in the market for challenging projects for the young designers on “Project Runway”, would be interested. I’ve no idea how to contact him, do you? We corset-loving guys need a whole new fashion–and it’s ABOUT TIME!
It wasn’t by intention, but it’s interesting that the past few posts have actually highlighted male corsets that are designed to look good on the outside. And, I think they succeed! It’s great to see these advances and designers thinking carefully about the corset as a high-fashion foundation for men.
